| + | Hi Folks, | ||
| + | |||
| + | Something I have been wondering about lately is how the feudal system works on Hârn. | ||
| + | |||
| + | Theoretically it is a chain of delegations; | ||
| + | |||
| + | The King owns the land (theoretically) and lends parts of it to earls, who in turn lends it to barons, who in turn lends it to lords (with a manor-house). The last object in this chain is the village (as I have understood it). | ||
| + | |||
| + | Questions: | ||
| + | # Does this mean that every village has a lord/manor-house in the village? | ||
| + | # Who rules a village typically? | ||
| + | # What is the relationship between a keep and a manor? | ||
| + | |||
| + | I would be grateful for answers. | ||
| + | |||
| + | /Hermes | ||
| + | |||
| + | |||
| + | Each village belongs to a group of villages under one manor. The local lord probably lives in the central and larger village which is the local market town. | ||
| + | |||
| + | The village normally has 2 or 3 leaders appointed by the local lord, such as the Beadle and the Reeve, who handle the day to day operations and report to the lord as needed, but likely not less than once a week. | ||
| + | |||
| + | A keep is a fortified building smaller than a castle. It may be part of a manor house or a castle, as normally only a very rich man could build a castle all at once. Much more typical is to build a Manor House,then fortify it, then build a Keep, then walls about the whole (stables, yard,Shops,kitchen et al), then a gate house and other structures, slowly adding to the holdings until they become considered a castle. Many times existing buildings were added to with upper stories or new wings. Note that you normally required permission from your feudal lords to build a castle, and probably a Keep. | ||

Hârn Wiki Document Structure
Here we'll design a better wiki system for structuring the wiki format, to save time, duplicates, crossovers of various documents and information.
Breaking it down
Breaking down all the areas, such as maps, regions, kingdoms, books, rule systems, will take a while, but comparing the books and finding a blend of all the resources, will paint a very unique picture of the overall feel and complexity of Hârn.

Hi Folks,
Something I have been wondering about lately is how the feudal system works on Hârn.
Theoretically it is a chain of delegations;
The King owns the land (theoretically) and lends parts of it to earls, who in turn lends it to barons, who in turn lends it to lords (with a manor-house). The last object in this chain is the village (as I have understood it).
Questions:
- Does this mean that every village has a lord/manor-house in the village?
- Who rules a village typically?
- What is the relationship between a keep and a manor?
I would be grateful for answers.
/Hermes
Each village belongs to a group of villages under one manor. The local lord probably lives in the central and larger village which is the local market town.
The village normally has 2 or 3 leaders appointed by the local lord, such as the Beadle and the Reeve, who handle the day to day operations and report to the lord as needed, but likely not less than once a week.
A keep is a fortified building smaller than a castle.

Hârnic Inquiries
Yeomen and Feudal Levies [PDF] (Ilkka Leskelä, published April 1, 2014)
Hârnic yeomen have been often discussed as part of the military, of the feudal levy. The militaristic tendency is typical for Hârn and Hârniacs, because RPGs share a common past with wargames, and many active Hârniacs and writers of fan fiction share an interest in military matters. In this article, we will take a look at the number and role of yeomen as the basis of the feudal levy. I hope the lessons of this article can be used as a basis for future discussions on the subject.

This article takes a closer look on what we know of the Hârnic yeomen, especially their numbers. As a general note, the yeomen of Hârn are a phenomenon of the feudal kingdoms. This leaves Orbaal, the Thardic Republic and the Barbarians out of the picture, even if we can take it granted that a class of free, warrior-oriented landowner (or cattle-owner) commoners can be found in every Hârnic society.

Tower Hills
HârnWorld, or Kèthîra, is the location of the misty island of Hârn, which lies west of the great continent of Lýthia, in the region of Venârivè.
These pages contain a range of information on Hârn, Venârivè, Lýthia and Kèthîra.
These pages include PDF documents and Excel Spreadsheets, these will need to be converted into tables/templates for referencing. Some pages have images to ADD as well.
Hârnic Economics
I have long had an interest in Hârnic economics. These are some of the pieces of analysis I have carried out over the years.
Kàldôric GDP
I attempted to calculated the 'gross domestic product' of the kingdom of Kàldôr:
- Kàldôr GDP (PDF); Kàldôr GDP (XLS).
Salt production
I sought to calculate supply and demand for salt on Hârn, based on population and the salt mines indicated on the kingdom maps:
- Salt Production (PDF); Salt Production (XLS).
Mines of Hârn
I was interested in which realms produced what resources, and thus who was trading what with whom.
- Mines of Harn (summary, PDF); Mines of Harn (detail, XLS)
- Mines of Chybísa (PDF) - consideration of what mines Chybísa might have, and where they might be.
Feeding Azadmêre
An ongoing debate is how the population of Azadmêre on Hârn is fed. The following analysis attempted to answer this question.
- Feeding Azadmêre (PDF); Feeding Azadmere (XLS).
Hârnic History
The history of the island of Hârn is interesting and complex. This multi-layered map enables Gamemasters to track developments over the centuries.
- Hârn History (PDF)
Hârn Linguistics
While many consider Hârn to be relatively linguistically homogenous, there are in fact a significant number of languages and dialects spoken on the island:
- Hârn Linguistics (PDF)
Lýthian Demography
One of my long term interests has been the demography of the island of Hârn and other regions of Lýthia. Some of this analysis is quite old, but I think still valid.
Hârn
- Hârnic population (PDF) - overview of the population of Hârn.
- Population of Hârnic regions (XLS) - analysis of the population of various fiefs, regions etc of Hârn.
Shôrkýnè and Huriséa
- Shôrkýnè population (PDF) - overview of the population of Shôrkýne.
- Hursiéan population (PDF); Hursiéan settlement list (PDF); Huriséan population (XLS) - various analyses of Hursiéan population and settlement patterns.
Ivínia
- Ivínian population (PDF); Ivínian population (XLS).
Azadmêre and Eváel
- Kuzhan population (PDF); Azadmêre kingdom statistics (XLS)
- Eváel population (PDF); Eváel kingdom statistics (XLS)
Military Forces
I have over time tried to calculate the military forces available to the various realms of Hârn and Lýthia. These provide estimates of both the 'war-muster' levels, as well as more 'ordinary' muster levels.
Eastern Hârnic Forces
Calculations of the forces of Kàldôr (~6,000), Mèlderýn (~7,100), Chybísa (~1,000), Orbáal (~2,300), Ázadmêre (~2,200), Eváel (~2,100), and others:
- Eastern Hârnic Forces v2 (PDF) ; Eastern Hârnic Forces v2 (XLS)
Western Hârnic Forces
Calculations of the forces of Réthem (~4,800), Kandáy (~5,000), and Thârda (~6,800):
- Western Hârnic Forces v2 (PDF); Western Hârnic Forces v2 (XLS)
Chélemby
Chélemby is a small but important island kingdom in the gulf of Shôrkýnè. Chélemby City is the largest urban centre in the northwestern part of Venârivè.
Most of my work on Chélemby has been incorporated into materials published by Kelestia Productions. Some of this material is available for free download from kelestia.com:
- Chéler Player's Guide (PDF, link to kelestia.com) - guide to the city and kingdom of Chélemby.
- Charts of Salónen Ekàtriása (PDF, link to kelestia.com) - charts providing information about the seas around Chélemby.
Jâra
Jâra, the region in northern Hârn currently encompassed by the kingdom of Orbáal, was conquered by Ivínian colonists from TR652-676.
Jâra was not a united realm, but rather a collection of domains, some styled 'principalities' or târvenôri. The following domains were in existence in TR640:
- Arathel, held by clan Merovynes: Arathel, Nemeryn, Teslyn.
- Pethwys, held by clan Weymyss.

Hôradir
Hôradir is the tribal range of the Hodíri, one of the most populous tribal people of Hârn.
Hôradir lies to the south of Chybisa, and west of Melderyn & Solora. Horadir falls within Melderyn's Dyriamarch, but it is the home of the Hodiri, a nomadic horse-people.
The total Hodiri population of Horadir is 25,204. There are 82 Hodiri tribes, with between 60 and 300 male members per tribe (120 - 600 people all told).
These tribes have roughly the following distribution (in terms of size):
- tribes with around 120 persons - 15 tribes; the Katchi-hodiri.
- tribes with around 240 persons - 27 tribes; the Jagunsagrai-hodiri.
- tribes with around 360 persons - 24 tribes; also considered Jagunsagrai-hodiri.
- tribes with around 480 persons - 11 tribes; the Uge-hodiri.
- the largest tribes, with around 600 persons - 5 tribes; the Kitu-hodiri.
The Hodiri range covers nearly 90 hexes, or over 12,000 sq. miles. Each tribe has both a summer (northern) and winter (southern) range, with migrations in spring & autumn.The Solori share the Hodiri ranges in the southeast, although they have traditionally moved back across the Soleno river in winter, when the Hodiri return from their summer ranges. The Chymak also maintain seasonal fishing camps on the southern coast, and trade with the Hodiri.
Jherdela's confederation of three tribes (the Kituguri, Qaraeni, and Boratan) have their summer range in the fertile lands of hexes 42 & 43, and their winter range on the coast in hexes 80, 89 & 90. Their fierce rivals, the Urtiguri, have their summer range in hex 32, and winter just north of Patrel in hex 66.
The Dugeai horseclan (summer range hex 2) engage in annual trade with the Chybisans, trading horses for a variety of goods, particularly steel weapons. Their rivals in this trade are the Temuhi, who have an arrangement with the Miners' Guild who operate an iron mine in their summer range (hex 7).

Bevon Manor (Kàldôr)
- Location: Melylim hundred, Vemionshire, Kingdom of Kàldôr
- Holder: Sir Alwyn Haber
- Liege: Constable of Zoben, for the Earl of Vemion
- Population: village 174, manor 33
Overview
Bevon Manor lies in the far west of Vemionshire, well nigh to the Fens of Kythlim Hundred. It has a total population of around 200 souls.
The Manor has 1,760 acres of good quality land (LQ 1.03). There are a total of 40 households, including Clan Haber, and 5 additional freeholders. The Manor has an annual income of around £240, and owes £22 plus 90 days service of one knight and three men-at-arms to the Constable at Zoben.
The Clan earns additional income from trade in herbs and other materials sourced from the Fens. In this way it is able to support a total of two knights - Sir Alwyn and his brother, Sir Lluwyn.
Clan Haber
Clan Haber are an ancient Vemion clan, who have held lands in west Vemion since time immemorial. The Clan has survived many changes of overlord, but are loyal to the Earl of Vemion. The Clan is well known throughout Vemionshire for its knowledge and expertise in matters of herblore.
The current clanhead is Sir Alwyn, younger son of Sir Bemyl, who died in TR 717. Sir Bemyl is survived by Lady Marthel, a renowned herbalist. Sir Alwyn's sister, Morgawen and his aunt, Caythleen also live at the Manor. Sir Alwyn's older brother, Sir Lluwyn, acquiesced to the naming of his younger brother as heir to the estate of Bevon. Sir Lluwyn is currently travelling in Kaldor, accompanied by his bondsman, Cydwyn.
Unlike most Kaldorian noble clans, Clan Haber are worshipers of Ilvir and Peoni (as are other villager folk of Bevon). Ancient Vemion tradition describes these two deities as the Father and Mother of all creation. Larani is seen as the Daughter of Spring. The Clan sponsors the Ilviran order of the Heron and Serpent, which has a small temple located on the edge of the Kythlim Fens.

Laránian church of Hârn
The church of Laráni plays a significant role in the politics of many of the states of Hârn, particularly Mèlderýn, Kàldôr and Kánday.
The structure of the church and its religious orders is complex. The following article attempts to trace the relationship between the elements and players:

Order of Lady of Paladins
Some excellent work was done on further developing one of the militant (fighting) orders of the church by Kerry Mould:

Distances to the horizon
Kèthîra has a smaller diameter than Terra: 11,500km compared to 12,756km. As a result, its curvature is greater, and the distance in terms of line-of-sight to the horizon is less than on Terra.
An observer of average height (5.6ft, or 1.7m) will see to a horizon of 4.4km, 2.7 miles or 1.1 leagues.
An observer on a tower of around 100ft or 30m will be able to see a horizon 18.6km / 11.5 miles / 4.6 leagues away.
Assuming good visibility, someone on a mountain of say 6,200ft (or 1,900m) would potentially see things as far away as 148km / 92 miles / 37 leagues / 7.4 hexes.
Measurement of the Harnisle
ADD: These to the above Distance as more examples; (from forum question)
Calcabrina: What is the measurement of Hârn in terms of sq. miles and sq. kilometers?
Anborn: The Hârn map it self covers 1,471,923 square kilometers or about 568,313 square miles.
Hârn excluding lakes, but including outlying islands, is about 628,867 square km or 242,807 square miles.
Hârn including lakes and outlying islands is about 646,229 square km or 249,537 square miles.
Lake benath is 17,432 square km or 6730 square miles.
I had this stuff in one of my files. I'm not sure, but I think Gary Morris came up with these numbers.
Also Hârn tallest mountain is Wynan at 9,766 Hârnic feet (3255.333 meters).
The highest water fall is Barsothe on the Kald River at 150 Harnic feet.
