Menekod was founded during the Corani Empire and seized in 653 by Arlun of Rethem, who began constructing the castle. In 681, King Nemiran granted it to the Order of the Copper Hook and it became their primary seat. In 695, Menekod was taken by Kanday in the last major clash of Ezar’s War. Queen Mirelael granted the castle to the Order of the Checkered Shield.
Menekod controls the road to Heroth, Dyrisa, and all of Kanday. It is a constant threat to southern Rethem. The knights of the order continually patrol the region. Most folk consider the Checkered Shield their sole defense against the return of the Theocracy. There is, however, a price to be paid: people are arrested on the slightest suspicion and detained indefinitely at their own expense. Laranian fanaticism permeates all social and commercial activity, making it difficult for Haleans and others to operate profitably.
The order’s present Chabla (grandmaster) is Sir Syman Tolfane. There is a dispute between him and the Sheriff of Norea at Quivum regarding control of Dovan, among other things. Sir Syman’s father, Sir Boromis Tolfane, is the Serolan Royal.
