Note: Section linking with arbitrary id USE . Be sure to use a name that is not likely to be duplicated. One way to do this is to incorporate the titles of the higher-level sections, at least in abbreviated form, e.g., Ontario-Natural_features for the "Natural features" subsection of the "Ontario" section of an article about the provinces of Canada. SARKUM [D9] 2 Gemala Hundred, Selionshire, 260

Coat of Arms

The original fortification at Sarkum was built by Gemalan tribes, independent allies of Aleathia. In 384, the tribal chieftains swore fealty to King Calin. The original castle was built by Xuaka in 435.

Sarkum nobility survived the Theocracy and founded the Kingdom of Gemala in 596. Rethem invaded in 688 and held Sarkum until 692, when the castle was surrendered to the Kandians after a major fire broke out. During the occupation, two kings of Rethem, Puril and Kabe, died at Sarkum. Ranald Milaka, who had been King of Gemala, swore fealty to Andasin III and married his daughter Mirelael. When Sarkum was recaptured, Ranald was made the Earl of Sarkum by Queen Eriel. After Mirelael became queen in 694, Ranald, as consort, played an active role in rebuilding Kanday.

In 707, Mirelael and Ranald’s son became King Andasin IV. The earl maintains a strong influence over his son, which has caused jealousy among other great nobles, notably the Earl of Heroth. Ranald has named his second son, the king’s younger brother Anaflas, as heir to the earldom. Anaflas is also the heir to the throne until Andasin produces an heir.

Ranald, 57, is in excellent health and active in the politics of Kanday. He also holds Kedis Keep as Sheriff of Eryna. The earl desires to expand his holdings to the island of Anfla by assimilating or conquering the native Adaenum tribes. The Milakas trace their ancestry to ancient Gemalan chieftains who once ruled Anfla.
