Founded as a Corani Empire river fort in 432, Zerien was captured for Kanday by the Order of the Checkered Shield in 626. It is now a barony held by Sir Petryn Irien as a vassal of the Earl of Selvos.

Sir Petryn, 53, is a hardened veteran of Ezar’s War. He served as steward to Marshal Grolis in the campaigns that brought Dunir, Selvos, and Menekod to Kanday. When Marshal Grolis became Earl of Selvos in 697, Sir Petryn served as Constable of Selvos. Queen Mirelael created the Barony of Zerien as a vassal fief of Selvos in 698. Sir Petryn served as Constable of Zerien until 701, when he was granted the title Baron of Zerien.

The baron has an unusual friendship with Sir Dernik Webstal, the Agrikan constable of the Rethemi keep at Phira. The friendship originated during the Great Flood of 707, when Sir Petryn rescued a floundering boat carrying Sir Dernik’s wife and children. The two men often visit each other to discuss prisoner exchanges. The friendship is not supported by Sir Temilin Grolis, the politically astute young heir to the earldom. The baron is careful to downplay it when the earl’s son visits Zerien each year.

Zerien is rich and fertile, a prime target for younger sons of Rethemi nobility raised on blood and ash. The Laranian fanaticism so common along the border is especially strong here. In fact, it has spread to the Peonian clergy as well, who preach a particularly judgmental and exclusionary form of the faith that has caused great concern in Aleath. Those seeking sanctuary in a local Peonian temple are likely to be turned over to Laranian authorities.
