ERONE

The first Laranian monastery at Erone was built in 453. Razed during the Theocracy, it was rebuilt in 623 after the Order of the Checkered Shield had begun its conquest of what is now northern Kandáy. Its full name is the Abbey of Saint Marabrine and Saint Oswyn after two "paladins" who were involved in the rise of the House of Kand. Erone is the seat of Perinore diocese.

The Rekela of Perinore is Sir Tamys Bakyth, who was appointed in 711. Sir Tamys, 56, became a cleric of Larani somewhat later than is common, having been a knight in service with the Baron of Zerien until 696. His rise has been swift, aided by his abilities and powerful connections. His appointment as the Sheriff of Norea in 717 has greatly increased his secular power (see Quivum, page 40).

Some believe that Sir Tamys is overly concerned with secular matters to the detriment of his spiritual duties. His speech and manner betray his early career. Possessed of a choleric temper, he is sometimes given to language that is more suited to the barracks than the cloister. There is great enmity between Tamys and the grandmaster of the Order of the Checkered Shield. Tamys has used both his secular power and his friendship with the Serekela to frustrate the Chabla’s ambition to control all northern chapterhouses. In 718, Tamys made the Reblena of Dovan, who oversees the northeast chapterhouses, Bailiff of Narath Hundred. This made him doubly under the command of Sir Tamys, both as bailiff and Reblena.

Rethem is theoretically part of the Diocese of Perinore, and Tamys sometimes uses this fact to meddle in foreign policy. It is largely due to his counsel that the king officially ignores the ongoing skirmishing between the Order of the Checkered Shield and the Agrikan Order of the Copper Hook.

DOVAN

• Dovan has been a vassal of Erone for generations but is now in the midst of a power struggle between the Rekela and the ambitious Chabla at Menekod. The Chabla believes the security of the kingdom can best be assured by central command of all Checkered Shield chapter houses from Menekod. In late 717, the Chabla petitioned the Serekela to transfer Dovan to Menekod. The Rekela, who is also the Sheriff of Noreashire, tightened his grip in early 718 by making Dovan the Hundredmoot for Narath Hundred. The appointment was supported by the Earl of Heroth and approved by the king. The Chabla has not given up.

Note: ADD a hook/plot point for further background to this dispute and enable Adventure Hooks for future ideas whereas this could contribute to the turmoil between Rethem, Tharda, and Kandáy.

Note: IDEA Expansion of Old ruined Monastery (maybe a Rotunda style (see Rotunda svätého Juraja (Romanesque Rotunda of St.George in Skalica, Slovakia or Saint Nicholas Rotunda in Cieszyn, Poland)) , and New Monastery (maybe like Fécamp Abbey), with hidden sections of the old Monastery (similar to Fécamp Abbey or another destroyed Abbey with similar history to ERONE's turbulant past.) More research on Norman Monasteries and Romanesque Monasteries need to be done. ADD to Hârn TO DO LIST.

• Architecture and Society in Normandy 1120-1270 ~ Google scanned Book showing plan for Fécamp Abbey. The abbey was the first producer of Bénédictine, a herbal liqueur, based on brandy. Might even be able to use this as model elsewhere depending on findings.

Note: (Fécamp Abbey: the scriptorium at Fécamp produced numerous illuminated manuscripts.) Carolingian architecture is the style of north European Pre-Romanesque architecture belonging to the period of the Carolingian Renaissance of the late 8th and 9th centuries. IDEA maybe even better suited for Maryael monastery?

• Church of St Mary and St David, Kilpeck The Church of St Mary and St David is famous for its Norman carvings. The church was built around 1140, and almost certainly before 1143 when it was given to the Abbey of Gloucester. It may have replaced an earlier Saxon church at the same site, and the oval raised form of the churchyard is typical of even older Celtic foundations. Around the 6th and 7th centuries the Kilpeck (Welsh:Llanddewi Cil Peddeg) area was within the British kingdom of Ergyng, which maintained Christian traditions dating back to the late Roman period. The possibility of the site holding Roman and even megalithic remains has been raised, but is unproven.
