 Let us recall for a moment the story of the two Greek artists. When Zeuxis attempted to part the curtains Parrhasius painted, for a moment he thought that the world of the painting was the world he lived in. When he recognised that the curtains were just paint, he also realised that, no matter how realistic the illusion, he would always be separated from the painting - he could never ruffle the curtains himself. Not even the artist himself can ever truly enter the world he depicts. And therefore Zeuxis never learned what was behind those curtains.

 Tôrachen al Tomándris was the most influential lyricist of his generation. In the first decades of the Seventh Century he wandered the courts of Western Venârivè, singing of gracious and valiant knights, chaste and alluring ladies, and wise and just rulers. In the world he celebrated in song, disease never appears. The poor are well fed by the alms of the mighty. War exists only to defeat evil. Rulers are either exemplars of justice or destined to be destroyed by better men. Lovers are always faithful, or their bad faith is appropriately punished. For good reason Tôrachen was called Troubadour - the 'Banisher of Troubles'.

 Looking west from Mûrshel, in southern Tríerzòn, about two and a half leagues, is an orchard-covered hill called Álantra. The summit was once the site of a fortified town of the same name, the centre of a Zonâran petty state from about {{Smallcaps|bt}}650 to {{Smallcaps|bt}}200. In {{Smallcaps|bt}}178 the citadel was taken over by a Laránian fighting order, and over the centuries it grew into Álantra Abbey. The keep still stands, surrounded by a large complex of barns and buildings, many much larger than the old stone tower. Overshadowing the entire group, with twin towers three times the height of the tallest barn, is Shélcomb Minster. On a clear day the two bells of the temple can be heard on the streets of the city in the valley below.

 In the Imperial Age, a visitor to the Dálken Emperor who looked beyond the resplendent throne - a little higher and to the left - could observe one of the more remarkable features of the Ah'Riha-Asha. The Peacock Mage was a human figure crafted of silver and colored glass. He was seated, looking down benevolently at the throne, and in his lap was a star chart. Within the chart, gemstones representing the planets continuously moved in accordance with their actual positions in the heavens. Around the Mage, symbols of the elements rose and fell according to their strength, as indicated by the planetary positions. Symbols representing Fate and Will rose and fell as well, indicating the status of the balance between the two fundamental forces of Destiny. From the Mage's mouth issued a stream of water, the strength of which indicated whether the specific moment was propitious for important decisions. The eyes, mouth, arms, and hands of the Mage all moved with complex articulations, leading many observers to conclude that it the Mage was in fact possessed by an arcane spirit.

By {{Smallcaps|tr}}150 he had already ruled for twenty-two years - he would rule for sixteen more before dying in his sleep - and under his rule the Empire had already conquered Gálamonìa, Pélona, and Gílech, and now exceeded the lost Târgan Empire in every measure. Mánquideh had fully recovered and was easily the greatest centre in Venârivè, with busy canals, thriving industries, and a population near a hundred thousand. And dominating Mánquideh was the Fiery Palace of the Lékha Emperor, which stood atop a man-made hill created from the rubble of Târgan buildings.
