CAER ERYNROTH
The royal citadel of Aleath was constructed between 633 and 45 by Andasin II as part of the agreement that made Aleath a freetown.

Constable Sir Denil Chahryn is charged with the defense of Aleath and the administration of the crown’s extensive local interests. Caer Erynroth’s garrison patrols the city and castle walls, leaving the streets to the mayor’s policing forces.

Caer Erynroth is home to an elite company of veteran medium foot, a company of equally experienced shortbow, and a score of servants. The latter are burdened by a number of lesser bureaucrats and dissolute hangers-on who fill their hours with petty political sniping and schemes to improve their fortunes.

Sir Denil Chahryn is the grand-nephew of Sir Grolis Chahryn, Earl of Selvos and lord of all of northwestern Kanday. The constable’s fiscal reputation is excellent. His payments to the royal treasury are always on time and usually exceed the demand. Sir Denil personally owns a 40 percent stake in the ''Geldara’s Butterfly'', a coastal nivik owned by mercantyler/usurer Damaen of Hilome.

Sir Denil is a strutting peacock who takes every opportunity to be the center of attention. He hosts monthly events for local nobility, and stays in close contact with the Mangai as well.

With the help of the unscrupulous mercantyler Damaen of Hilome, Sir Denil has grown wealthy importing the drug Fanosel for the recreational use of the more dissipated of the courtiers and a veteran manus of archers. The servants know that the king would dismiss Sir Denil if the scandal ever reached his ears, but they are afraid of Sir Denil and his warriors. Sir Denil knows this as well; he has never used the drug himself. Much of his personal wealth is in gold and silver jewelry hidden here and the balance is cached in an oak chest buried near Selvos.

Estates vary considerably in their management. While differences in climate and soil account for some of the differences, arguably a greater factor is the access to urban markets. Market access affects the intensity of cultivation, the choice of crops, the employment of skilled labour, and many other aspects of the manorial economy.

Manors, estates, and farms in close proximity to a city are organised to take best advantage of their position. <u>For example</u>, in the map below, the regions in '''<span style="color:#FF0000">red</span>''' are <u>dedicated largely to the feeding of the city</u>. These lands are intensively cultivated to maximize the production of foodstuffs – mainly cereals and vegetables. Most manors specialize in just a handful of crops in an effort to achieve economies of scale, peasant holdings generally are smaller and more land is cultivated as part of the main estate. Firewood (as charcoal) is also an important product from these estates. As these estates have access to urban goods of generally better quality and lower price, they employ few craftsmen of their own and dedicate as much labour as possible to farming.

The most remote manors are managed very differently. Due to the high cost of transport, bulk foodstuffs from these manors aren’t profitable. To generate cash, these estates must find other specialties. Wine is a possibility where the weather is clement, but more often the answer is wool and animal products. No matter the product, the cost of transport seriously impacts the cash profitability of these manors. With no chance for export, the minimum possible effort is put into planting staple crops – sometimes fields aren’t even ploughed before sowing. This allows more labour to be put into the export products as well as the crafts necessary to maintain the estate. As urban markets aren’t accessible, self-sufficiency is essential and these remote estates employ more craftsmen of all kinds. For the masters of these estates, the best hope for prosperity comes from mining - not so much for the ore, as in most realms mineral wealth belongs to the crown, but from the market that the mine creates for the manor.

Most manors lay between these two extremes. In general, the closer to the urban market the more opportunities there are for profit. Higher value foodstuffs – beans, fruit, cheese, beer, wine, meat – predominate. Stone and lime, lath and building lumber, wool and flax – there are many potential exports, and most estates will produce several. However, as the proximity to the market increases, the competitiveness of the estate’s goods decreases and the options become more limited. Self-sufficiency is always considered a virtue, and therefore these manors will plant staple crops and employ a variety of craftsmen, but this is balanced against the need to provide products for the urban market. The intensity of cultivation will vary with the quality of the land and availability of labour, which has been in chronic under-supply almost everywhere since the Red Death.

Note the importance of the river, which would be even more apparent were it not for certain hazards to navigation on the lower Erýn. Transport by boat is roughly a tenth as expensive as by cart, and while navigability is dependent on the weather, in wet climates roads may be impassible much of the time.
